Manual S equipment selection: turning a load into the right system

Manual S is the residential equipment selection standard that turns a Manual J load into a specific system, while Manual J determines the heating and cooling loads that system must serve.

That distinction matters because completing a load calculation does not automatically produce a valid equipment selection. The load is an input. The selected furnace, air conditioner, or heat pump must still be evaluated at the indoor and outdoor conditions used for the project.

A model described by nominal capacity may deliver something different at those conditions. Its sensible capacity, latent capacity, and heating output can change with temperature, airflow, and the selected equipment combination. Manual S provides the procedure for connecting those performance characteristics to the calculated load.

Where the load calculation stops and selection begins

A Manual J load calculation estimates the residential heating and cooling loads at the chosen design conditions. It gives the contractor a target, but it does not choose a model, match indoor and outdoor components, or establish how a particular system performs.

Manual S, published by the Air Conditioning Contractors of America, covers procedures for selecting and sizing residential heating, cooling, dehumidification, and humidification equipment. ACCA describes it as the only procedure recognized by the American National Standards Institute for residential equipment selection.

The workflow is sequential:

  • Manual J establishes the load.
  • Manual S selects equipment capable of serving that load within the standard’s sizing limits.
  • Manual D uses the design information to develop the duct system.

These procedures are intended to work together. If a shop performs Manual J but skips Manual S, it leaves a gap between the calculated requirement and the equipment on the proposal.

That gap can remain hidden when the nominal capacity appears close to the load. The apparent match may not account for the equipment’s actual output at the project’s design temperatures. It may also fail to separate sensible cooling from latent performance.

A complete selection therefore starts with the Manual J results and continues into the manufacturer’s expanded performance data. The contractor compares the available equipment at the relevant operating conditions and documents why the selected model is appropriate.

Why nameplate tonnage is not a selection

Nominal capacity is a product category, not a complete description of field performance. It is useful for identifying equipment, but it does not show exactly what the system will deliver under every combination of indoor temperature, outdoor temperature, airflow, and component match.

Manual S addresses that problem by directing the contractor to manufacturers’ expanded performance data. Depending on the equipment and application, that data includes sensible capacity, latent capacity, and heating capacity across various operating conditions.

For cooling, total capacity alone does not answer the selection question. The equipment must address both the sensible and latent portions of the load. A system that appears adequate based on total capacity can still be a poor match when those components are evaluated separately.

Heat pump selection presents another layer. Heating capacity changes as outdoor conditions change, so the value associated with a model name cannot substitute for performance data at the heating design condition. Cooling and heating requirements must both be considered when choosing the equipment and planning how the system will operate.

The same discipline applies to matched components. The outdoor unit, indoor coil, air handler, furnace, and airflow affect system performance as a combination. An AHRI certified reference number can help identify a certified match, while expanded manufacturer data provides the operating information needed for the Manual S evaluation.

Manual S establishes sizing limits, but contractors should take those limits directly from the applicable edition of the standard. Repeated figures from summaries, training slides, or older references can lose important context or reflect a superseded edition.

What changed in the 2023 edition

The current edition is ANSI/ACCA Manual S - 2023. It received ANSI approval and supersedes the 2014 second edition, ANSI/ACCA 3-2014.

The update expanded guidance for variable-capacity equipment. ACCA has connected that change to the increased use of heat pumps and electrification, making the edition especially relevant to the systems contractors are now selecting.

Variable-capacity equipment makes a nameplate-only approach even less useful. These systems operate across a range rather than at a single fixed output. Selection requires attention to how the equipment performs and controls capacity under the project’s conditions, not merely whether a nominal label resembles the calculated load.

The 2023 edition was also ANSI approved in time to be referenced by the International Code Council’s 2024 edition of the International Residential Code. That reference does not make the standard enforceable everywhere. An inspector applies the code edition and amendments adopted by the applicable jurisdiction, and local adoption can lag publication.

For a shop, the practical issue is edition control. Calculation forms, software settings, written procedures, and reviewer expectations should point to the same edition. Otherwise, a technician may use a current load calculation while applying selection habits or limits remembered from older material.

Making it a step your shop actually performs

The most reliable way to prevent Manual S from being skipped is to make equipment selection a defined deliverable rather than an assumption between design and ordering.

Start by preserving the Manual J design inputs and results in a form that the person selecting equipment can review. The selection file should make the heating load, sensible cooling load, latent cooling load, and design conditions easy to identify.

Next, obtain expanded performance data for the equipment combination under consideration. Use operating conditions that correspond to the project instead of relying on a nominal rating. Record the selected airflow and any other inputs needed to understand the capacity values being compared.

Then compare the equipment’s heating, sensible, and latent performance with the applicable loads. Apply the sizing limits and procedures from ANSI/ACCA Manual S - 2023 itself. If the first model considered does not produce a defensible match, evaluate another model or configuration rather than forcing the calculation to justify a predetermined box.

Finally, retain the selection support with the job documentation. A useful record allows another qualified person to follow the path from the Manual J results to the selected equipment without reconstructing the decision from memory. Manufacturer performance tables, identified operating conditions, component information, and the final selection rationale all help make that review possible.

This process also improves internal handoffs. Sales, design, installation, and commissioning personnel can work from the same selection assumptions. If equipment availability causes a substitution, the shop can repeat the selection review instead of treating nominally similar models as interchangeable.

Manual J is not the end of residential system design. It establishes the load that makes a defensible selection possible. Manual S is the step that tests actual equipment against that load, using the performance data and conditions that determine what the system can really deliver.
